The cargo throughput of Zhoushan Port in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, stood at 571 million tons in 2020, a year-on-year increase of 6.62 percent, local media reported on Jan 21.

Specifically, the port handled 127 million tons of oil and gas, a year-on-year increase of 44.71 percent, a record high of nearly 1.67 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 22.2 percent year-on-year increase, and more than 9 million tons of grain, a year-on-year growth of 23.9 percent.

According to a staff member from the Zhoushan shipping and port bureau, the explosive growth of oil and gas throughput in Zhoushan Port was due to international oil price fluctuation.

In addition, the operation of the first phase of the refining-chemical integration project by Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical Co drove the import and export of crude oil and refined oil products. The bunker oil supply in Zhoushan also promoted the increase of oil and gas throughput in the port.

More foreign trade ships, new shipping routes and expanded container businesses also contributed to the record container throughput at Zhoushan Port last year.
