Zhoushan Port in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has recently cooperated with the Port Logistics Park of Wuhan Economic Development Zone in Wuhan, Hubei province, local media reported on Dec 24.

The two sides will cooperate in transitioning from bulk transportation to container transportation so as to lower the logistics costs of importing grains to Wuhan and its surrounding areas as well as boost the operations of Hannan Port in the city.

"Traditional bulk transportation usually takes about 30 days to 45 days, while container transportation will reduce the time needed by about half," said the head of the Port Logistics Park.

Container transportation is a type of modern logistics solution that can lower cargo wear and tear and reduce logistics costs.

Ye Yongqing, the general manager of Zhoushan Port Co, said that the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River are home to a large population and advanced industries. As such, the area has a large demand for imported soybeans and corn, with annual transportation of these crops amounting to between 5 and 10 million metric tons.

Ye noted that the company has piloted such business thrice and that he is confident in tapping the transportation market along the Yangtze River.

Zhoushan is an important grain distribution center and processing base in East China's coastal areas. In 2018, Zhoushan Port received more than 16 million tons of grain, 90 percent of which were transported to Yangtze River cities.
