Putuo and Dinghai districts in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, have been shortlisted for the top 100 districts in China with the strongest tourism industries, according to a recent report.

The report was compiled by the national municipal district tourism research group and the Beijing Huaxia Baiqiang Tourism Consultation Center based on their research on 973 municipal districts in China.

The list is based on six indicators: tourism development, government role, the tourism industry's driving role, environmental protection, tourist facilities and services, and tourism quality and market supervision.

Putuo district (8th) boasts 455 islands, 32 of which are inhabited, and accounts for 70 percent of island tourism in Zhejiang.

Dinghai district (87th) is a laid-back district with a history of nearly 6,000 years. It is a renowned marine culture city and home to numerous historical sites, including the 1,000-year-old Zuyin Temple and the battlefield of the First Opium War.

The district is also home to many renowned figures, including Dong Jianhua, the first chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
