Zhoushan Port in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province has seen an average year-on-year increase of 8.4 percent in cargo throughput over the past five years, lcoal media reported on Dec 18.

In 2015, the cargo throughput at the port totaled 379 million metric tons, and in 2020 that number is expected to reach 567 million tons, accounting for half of the total amount at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port.

The shipping capacity of Zhoushan Port has experienced an average yearly growth of 8 percent, growing to 2.5 million tons from 2015 to 2020.

The Shulanghu Terminal on Qushang Island received the Panamanian bulk carrier Sea Guaiba carrying 318,000 tons of iron ore on Dec 15.

According to Zhou Gao, an employee at the terminal's operator Zhoushan Shulanghu Terminal Co, since Shulanghu Terminal started operations in 2016, the number of 400,000-ton ships it received per year increased from six in 2016 to 60 this year, and its annual cargo throughput grew from 13.17 million tons in 2016 to over 65 million tons in 2020.

Zhou said that Shulanghu Terminal has kept busy since COVID-19 began to subside in China, and it's loading and unloading schedule is already set for the remainder of the year.

Solid infrastructure is the foundation of any port's development. That's why over the past five years, Zhoushan Port has invested 42.9 billion yuan ($6.55 billion) to build 105 berths, including 30 10,000-ton-or-above berths, bringing the total number to 314.

The port has also added 310 kilometers of shipping routes and 124 square kilometers of anchorage ground, bringing the total to 1,500 km and 437 sq km respectively.
