Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in East China's Zhejiang province aims to grow into a world-class port in order to better contribute to the development of foreign trade in the Yangtze River Delta, local media reported recently.

Statistics from the Ministry of Transport show that in October, the cargo throughput at the port grew 9.6 percent year-on-year to 101.59 million metric tons, including 2.71 million twenty-foot equivalent units, a 21.2 percent year-on-year increase.

In the first 10 months, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port delivered roughly 989 million tons of cargo, a year-on-year increase of 5.4 percent, including 24 million TEUs, a 2.4 percent year-on-year increase.

In 2015, Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group Co was established to manage the ports in both Ningbo and Zhoushan.

Over the past five years, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has made major strides. From 2016 to 2019, the port's annual cargo throughput increased from 920 million tons to 1.12 billion tons, an average annual growth rate of 6.7 percent.

The port's annual container throughput increased from 21.56 million to 27.54 million over the same period, ranking third in the world.

In 2019, the port became the only port in the world with more than 1.1 billion tons of annual cargo throughput and has ranked first worldwide for 11 years in a row in terms of cargo throughput.
