Two special towns in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, were recently recognized as provincial special towns by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, according to recent local media reports.

Special towns are towns with high-performance industries that develop based on their unique strengths, according to a senior official from the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

Dinghai distant-water fishing town, located in the Zhoushan National Distant-Water Fishing Base, has a planned area of 3.18 square kilometers and boasts a convenient location, as it is just 30 km away from Putuo district, 100 km from downtown Ningbo, and 300 km from Hangzhou and Shanghai.

The fishing town revolves around the marine health industry, which includes food, healthcare products, and biological medicine, and it is ramping up efforts to develop its marine culture and tourism industries.

In 2018, the fishing town was recognized as a 3A-level scenic spot (5A being the highest level in China), as it receives more than 300,000 tourists per year.

Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River on the east coast, the Shenjiamen Fishing Port is the largest shelter harbor in the world and is known as the "Fishing City of the East".

In early 2016, the port was nominated as a provincial special town and started developing its tourism industry based on its fishing culture and seafood.

The port's Marine Cultural and Creative Zone, which has been renovated from old shipyards, oil depots, and icehouses, was also recently shortlisted as a demonstration area for the national marine culture industry.
