Putuo among China's happiest districts for third consecutive year

Putuo district in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province was named among China's 10 happiest districts for the third time, according to the 2020 Chinese Happy City Forum held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on Nov 18.

The list was released by weekly magazine Oriental Outlook and a think tank, managed by China state news agency Xinhua, and compiled based on research into local residents' sense of identity, belonging, safety and satisfaction, among others.

Industries are the building blocks of a happy city. In recent years, Putuo has made tireless efforts to transform its traditional industries and develop emerging industries.

In 2019, the added value of high and new technology industries totaled 1.41 billion yuan ($214.19 million), a year-on-year increase of 13.8 percent, and the operating revenue of core digital economy sectors soared 28.6 percent year-on-year to 220 million yuan in the first half of this year.

The district also streamlined procedures for administrative affairs by offering online services.

Last year, the rate of good air quality in Putuo increased to 95.8 percent of days, water quality at all centralized drinking water sources was rated satisfactory, and nearly 2 million square meters of land was afforested.

Moreover, Putuo also restored 150,000 square meters of wetland, dredged 3.39 square kilometers of mud, and paved 3.5 km of sewage intercepting pipe over the past three years.
