Twenty-seven Dazhou locals will take internships at companies in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, after graduating from a sailing class offered by Zhoushan Marine School, local media reported on Sept 16.

Dazhou is a poverty-stricken city in Sichuan province which was paired with the much wealthier Zhoushan in 2018 in an attempt to lift the city from poverty.

Since then, the human resources and social security departments in the two cities have cooperated to alleviate labor shortages in Zhoushan by sending Dazhou workers to the city.

In October last year and May this year, Zhoushan trained 45 sailors from Dazhou, all of whom have found jobs in Zhoushan.

To date, Zhoushan has trained roughly 1,000 Dazhou natives in electromechanical engineering, tourism management, and sailing.

"The sailing class is a win for everyone," said Huang Dongnan, chairman of the Zhoushan Shipowners Association, adding that it will not only help trainees shed poverty, but also offer more workers for Zhoushan's shipping companies in dire need of sailors.

"Labor service cooperation with Zhoushan has created jobs for our locals and increased their incomes," said Yang Xiang, deputy director of the Dazhou municipal human resources and social security department.

Yang noted that more than 500 rural residents of Dazhou have worked in Zhoushan.
