Zhoushan graduate joins rescue at Aegean Sea

Li Kefei, a Zhoushan graduate, participated in a rescue in the Aegean Sea on Aug 25 local time after seeing six adults lifting two children out of the sea after a shipwreck, local media reported.

Li is the third mate of the "Ocean Ang" bulk cargo ship owned by China Huangyang Maritime Center Co Ltd, which was the nearest ship at the time of the shipwreck.

Li and the ship's crew searched for and rescued victims around with their lifeboats, rescuing 41 people within an hour.

Under the supervision of Captain Zhang Hui, the crew also took the temperatures of the victims and offered them face masks and blankets. Medical personnel on the Chinese boat also dressed their wounds.

At 10 pm, all 41 rescuees were delivered to the Greek Coast Guard and Ocean Ang went on its way.

The charterer of the Ocean Ang spoke highly of the crew's actions during the rescue and sent an e-mail praising Captain Zhang, saying that his prompt action in responding to a call for assistance at sea is indeed very commendable and showcases excellent seamanship and leadership abilities.

According to a news bulletin released by the Greek Coast Guard on Aug 26, they cooperated with five surrounding cargo ships to rescue 96 refugees and illegal immigrants after receiving an emergency call from a refugee boat on the evening of Aug 25.
