Dongji, an island town in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has become a popular tourist spot in recent years thanks to its efforts to improve tourism infrastructure, local media reported recently.

The town used to be short of daily supplies, but since the end of April this year, many new grocery stores have opened in the town, alleviating the shortage.

Dongji is also working to develop its four inhabited islands, focusing on specific areas. For example, Huangxing Island is focusing on water sports while Miaozihu Island is tapping into its folk culture.

The town also transformed Daodou Street into a popular tourist spot by establishing a museum, a fisherman's painting exhibition hall, restaurants, souvenir shops, homestays, and other tourism facilities.

Distinctive homestays have also been springing up in the town in recent years. Statistics show that in 2018, Dongji was home to 185 fisherman's homestays and 36 boutique homestays.

In 2019, Dongji received 261,100 tourists, a year-on-year increase of 11.34 percent, and earned 273 million yuan ($39.92 million) in tourism revenue.
