Zhoushan, an island city in East China's Zhejiang province, received the highest evaluation result from the provincial government in terms of Beautiful Zhejiang construction in 2019, local media outlets reported on Aug 16.

Beautiful Zhejiang construction is the upgraded version of the previous Eco-friendly Zhejiang construction, both of which were launched to practice the "Two Mountains" theory.

The theory states that "clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver," and focuses on environmental protection and development.

In recent years, Zhoushan has been adhering to the principle of "mountains, rivers, forests, fields, and lakes are a community of life" in improving its natural environment.

The concentration of PM2.5 in Zhoushan last year was 20 micrograms per cubic meter, the lowest in Zhejiang and a 16.7 percent year-on-year decrease, while its good air quality rate was 97.8 percent, the highest in Zhejiang.

The quality of its surface waters controlled by the municipal government or above met the national standard.

Moreover, Zhoushan's investment growth rate in environmental protection and management was 53.1 percent, the third highest in the province.

The city has also promoted the green transformation of traditional industries, including shipbuilding and repair, as well as fish meals processing.

The standard management of green ship repair companies was recognized by the State Council this year and will be replicated nationwide, while the city's green transformation in oil and gas recovery, as well as green port construction have received recognition from the provincial government.
