Four products produced in Zhoushan, an island city in East China's Zhejiang province, have recently obtained protection from the European Union (EU), local media reported on Aug 9.

The EU and China have signed a landmark agreement on geographical indications (GI) to recognize each other's protected regional products. The agreement protects the trademarks of 200 GIs in China and the EU.

GI is a label used for products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are closely connected to their place of origin.

The four Zhoushan-grown produces are Shengsi mussel, Putuo Buddha tea, Zhoushan blue crab and Zhoushan hairtail.

Shengsi mussels are produced in Shengsi county, Zhoushan. The county's abundant food, fertile water, and suitable water temperatures offer a great environment for mussels, which are known for their plump meat, delicious taste, and high nutritional content.

Putuo Buddha tea is known for its emerald green color, fragrant aroma, and refreshing taste.

Zhoushan blue crabs boast tender meat rich in protein, fat, and minerals. They are not only popular among Chinese seafood lovers, but in other countries as well, making them an important export for China.

Zhoushan hairtails are also popular in foreign countries due to their tender meat and high nutritional content. Their most distinctive feature is their black eyes, easily removable scales, and small bones.
