An association was established in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on Aug 6 to coordinate the development of the city's sports industry, according to local media reports.

The Zhoushan Sports Industry Association is a non-profit sports organization with an independent legal status. It is attended by professionals, enterprises, and public institutions involved in the city’s sports sector.

Zhoushan has made significant progress developing its sports industry in recent years.

More than 3,100 fitness facilities have been erected across the city, covering nearly all villages and residential communities, according to a report unveiled at the launch ceremony.

The city is also home to over 1,000 sports organizations and employs 10,000-plus sports instructors.

A survey showed that more than 30 percent of the city's population takes part in physical exercise regularly and over 90 percent meet national physical fitness standards.

Meanwhile, maritime sporting events such as marathons, triathlons, and sailing competitions have also been flourishing in Zhoushan.

The city is currently seeking new drivers of growth by exploring new recreational activities such as cycling, ocean fishing, and yachting.
