China's first meteorological warning system for port operations unveiled

Updated : 2020-07-30 (chinadaily.com.cn)

A meteorological warning system for port operations co-compiled by relevant departments in Zhoushan and Ningbo was unveiled on July 28.

This is the nation's first meteorological alert system designed for port operations.

Official data show that the Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the world's largest port in terms of cargo throughput, loses 600 to 800 hours which should be in oepration per year, as the comprehensive weather forecasting service is not sufficiently tailored to ports.

To tackle this problem, the two cities' market supervision and meteorological authorities have started to compile new standards for the Ningbo Zhoushan Port since the beginning of this year.

The new warning system has set up different warning levels for wind and visibility. Hail and tornados are classified as orange and red levels, respectively, with red being the highest warning level.

The system, which is set to take effect starting Aug 28, is expected to help increase the operating time of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port and boost the integrated development of Zhoushan and Ningbo, according to experts.
