Mussel industry booms on Gouqi Island

Updated : 2020-07-10 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Gouqi Island has long been known for its mussels.

Kong Honghai is a mussel farmer who lives on the island. In 1985, he and his family made an annual income of 5,000 yuan ($724.6) from mussel farming.

Located in Shengsi county, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, the island was honored as Zhejiang's home of mussels by the provincial marine fisheries department in 2001 and a provincial demonstration zone for mussel farming in 2002.

Over the past few years, Kong's income has increased significantly. "If it is a bumper harvest year this year, my mussels could sell for around 600,000 yuan. I'm looking forward to it," he said.

From 1999 to 2019, the mussel farming area on Gouqi had continuously improved. It is the second largest island in Shengsi county and its mussel farming area accounts for more than 60 percent of the county's total mussel farming area in 2019.

A complete mussel industrial chain involving breeding, processing, and tourism has now formed on the island.
