The bridge connecting the main island of Zhoushan with Daishan is moving closer to completion, with its three 180-meter-high towers being linked together on June 29.

The bridge stretches 1,630 meters and can accommodate oil tankers weighing up to 100,000 metric tons.

The busy waters and web of complex submarine cables have made construction of the bridge's main tower difficult since construction began on Oct 29 in 2018.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.

The bridge is an integral part of the transportation system supporting Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the busiest seaport in the world.

The transportation system costs an estimated 16.324 billion yuan ($2.36 billion) to develop and spans a length of 36.78 kilometers in total. In addition to the Zhoushan-Daishan Bridge currently under construction, it also includes Fuchimen Bridge and Yushan Bridge.

In the future, the system will be connected with expressways linking Zhoushan with Ningbo and Shanghai, which will boost the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region.
