Jagoda Jaroslaw, from Poland, has been living in Zhoushan in Zhejiang province, since 2008, and has witnessed the rapid changes of this island city.

Jaroslaw married a local woman and has been devoted to helping Zhoushan become a National Civilized City for many years, proving himself truly a "son-in-law" of the Chinese city.

Jaroslaw usually begins his everyday "fixed work" – sorting garbage – after dinner. He not only sorts his own garbage, but also encourages his family to do it together.

"I used to tell him that if it was just you sorting garbage, and no one else did it, it's useless," said Jaroslaw's wife, surnamed Chen. She said that whenever she said so he would tell her his behavior can slowly influence others.

Under his influence, now his family and friends are used to garbage sorting and have done a fairly good job. "This is my contribution to Zhoushan," said Jaroslaw.

In daily life, Jaroslaw also voluntarily takes children to cross the road when the traffic is busy, and often rearranges bikes that are casually parked in the community. When asked why he does these things, he always says, "Zhoushan is our home, every citizen has the responsibility to make our city better."

Speaking of the first impression of Zhoushan, Jaroslaw said, "The city had an unremarkable look. But I was deeply attracted by Zhoushan people's generosity and hospitality."

According to Jaroslaw, great changes have taken place in Zhoushan since the city began National Civilized City construction. It's now green, beautiful, bright, clean and new.
