Coastline renovation campaign obtains national certification

Updated : 2020-06-18 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Formerly home to an abandoned port littered with construction waste, the northern coastline of Lujiazhi Island has now emerged as a popular scenic attraction in Zhoushan.

This transformation is primarily due to a campaign launched by local authorities to echo the central government's call to promote the renovation of coastlines.

The renovation of the coastline of Lujiazhi Island obtained national certification on June 17, making it the first such project in Zhejiang.

Wang Yanna, who runs a nearby seafood stall, said that since the environment has improved, more people would come out for walks and square dancing, increasing business.

In November 2016, Zhoushan received funds from the central government to push ahead with the coastline renovation campaign.

The campaign, receiving 730 million yuan ($105.7 million) in total investment, is primarily aimed at restoring the environment around the Shenjiamen fishing port and Lujiazhi Island.

Over a course of more than three years, Zhoushan has cleaned up 125,000 square meters of old or unused structures near the shore, demolished 18 abandoned wharfs, renovated and restored 8.7 kilometers of coastline, restored 15,500 square meters of wetland, and built three island ecological parks.

In addition, the city has completed the largest seabed dredging project for a fishing port in history, with 3.52 million cubic meters being dredged.

The marine ecosystem, which has suffered severely from human disturbance, has now been restored in Zhoushan, according to an official from the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Natural Resources.

The city's coastlines have been completely transformed. The original dirty and chaotic industrial coastlines have now been replaced by recreational bike paths, pedestrian sightseeing paths, and sightseeing platforms.

The campaign has increased the quality of life among local residents, a local government official said, who added that the city plans to explore the establishment of an ecological restoration system and develop the city into a national model city for island ecological restoration.
