Waxberry to enter Zhoushan market in two weeks

Updated : 2020-06-08 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The Wandao waxberry, a specialty waxberry native to Zhoushan, will hit the market in the city in two weeks. The output of the berry is expected to be roughly three times that of last year.

Yuan Weijun, owner of a waxberry orchard in Gaoxie village, Baiquan town, Dinghai district, has been busy weeding his orchard, which will make it easier for visitors to pick the fruit.

Yuan expects a bumper harvest for the berries this year, as the output of his orchard is set to exceed 5,000 kilograms, versus 1,500-2,000 kilomgrams last year.

Gaoxie village, with more than 1,000 households growing the fruit, will yield at least 25,000 kilograms, Yuan estimated.

Lin Haibing, a farmer from an orchard near Hedong reservoir in Baiquan town, also predicted the yield will be three times that of last year.

"A tree yielded 50 kilograms of berries last year, but this year they will yield closer to 150 kilometers."

Yuan revealed that many people have already begun booking online, even though the berries aren't even ripe yet.

He expects the price to be a little lower than in previous years due to the large quantity, but the price for high quality specimens will be about the same as last year, which topped 70 yuan ($10.1) per 500 grams.

Qiu Lijun, a senior agronomist at the Dinghai agriculture and rural affairs bureau, predicted that this year's waxberries would be ripe around June 20.

"June 23 to 25 at the latest, almost the same as last year, depending on the weather," he said.

The waxberry plantation area in Zhoushan this year surpassed 3,300 hectares, and is estimated to have an output of 16,000 kilograms, Qiu said.
