Zhoushan riding 5G wave

Updated : 2020-05-19

Multiple places in Zhoushan now have access to 5G networks, including the city's main urban area, Zhujiajian Scenic Spot, and the urban areas of Daishan county and Shengsi county, and the city plans to construct more than 1,350 5G base stations costing a total of 400 million yuan ($57.9 million) within the year.

China has decided to go full speed ahead on the construction of internet infrastructure and plans to complete 550,000 5G base stations. By the end of March, a total of 198,000 5G base stations had been built across the nation.

A local resident surnamed Sun is among the first 5G cellphone purchasers in the city.

Impressed by the 5G network's high speeds and low latency, Sun declared that the era of 5G has now arrived in Zhoushan, though it had taken a long time for the city to progress from 2G to 4G.

The nation's three major telecommunications operators- China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom- have all established a business presence in Zhoushan. 5G networks are also being tested in commercial fields in the city, such as transportation, ports, medicine, and shipbuilding.

Local authorities plan to roll out guidelines for the construction of 5G base stations so as to leverage opportunities brought about by the technology.
