The life expectancy of household-registered residents in Zhoushan in 2019 exceeded 80 for the first time, reaching 80.1 years, official data show.

The figures for men and women were 77.54 and 82.76 respectively.

Last year, the incidence of premature death from the four major chronic diseases was 10.74 percent, down 10.5 percent from 2015, indicating a steady increase in health among residents of the city.

The top five causes of death in Zhoushan were cancer, cerebrovascular disease, heart disease, respiratory disease, injury and poisoning, accounting for 87.14 percent of the total number of deaths.

Chronic diseases remain the biggest threat to public health.

A provincial epidemiological survey showed that the number of hypertension patients in the city is estimated to be more than 250,000, and the number of diabetes patients is more than 70,000.

Chronic diseases have an increasingly severe impact on the health of residents. The local health authorities have formulated an action plan to prevent and control such diseases.

According to the city's disease control experts, there are numerous factors behind the occurrence of chronic non-communicable diseases, among which, studies have shown that lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity are the biggest contributors.
