Zhoushan received a total of 631,200 visitors during the May Day holiday ending on May 5, bringing in 869 million yuan ($125.9 million) in tourism revenue, official data show.

Though the result is significantly below that of the same period last year, it is much higher than the numbers seen during the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday last month.

Visitors spent more on average, with official statistics showing that per capita tourism consumption in the city rose 7.01 percent year-on-year to 1,377 yuan.

More than 28 percent of rooms at starred hotels in the city were booked during the five-day holiday, 18 percent higher than during the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday.

Scenic rural tours and sea island tours were among the top choices for visitors.

Shengsi, an island county in Zhoushan, received 108,700 tourists from May 1 to May 4.

On May 1 alone, scenic attractions in the county received 12,000 tourists. To deal with this influx, the city increased the frequency of ferries to the same level as weekends during the peak tourist season.

More than 156,000 visitors made reservations ahead of time, 34 percent of whom made them online.

Zhujiajian, Putuo Mountain and Dinghai district were the top three tourism destinations in the city during the holiday.

The visitors that chose to drive to Zhoushan by themselves were primarily from the cities including Ningbo, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Shaoxing.
