Zhoushan, an island city in Zhejiang province, has been focusing on environmental conservation in recent years in order to build itself into a "garden city on the ocean".

Xinjian village, Dinghai district has seen particular progress in this regard, with its infrastructure and environment improving significantly.

The village has widened its recreational trails and decorated them with flowers, and built a 20,000-square-meter ecofriendly parking lot and sewage disposal plant that can dispose of 200 metric tons of sewage per day.

The improved environment has increased tourists to the village. It received more than 450,000 tourists last year, and the per capita annual income of local residents reached 39,000 yuan ($5,508).

The village is currently home to more than 40 restaurants and 18 homestays.

Zhoushan has also been working to reduce pollution, especially water pollution, by improving sewage treatment mechanisms.

It aims to build "no-direct-sewage-discharge zones" in three industrial parks, 77 communities, and 12 towns this year.

According to the city's environmental protection department, it will also work to reduce air pollution and improve solid waste treatment this year by strengthening its environmental improvement system and urging companies to take action to protect the environment.

Zhoushan has been named by provincial authorities as a model city in environmental conservation for the past 10 years, and the city's Shengsi county and Putuo district have been selected as national demonstration zones for environmental conservation.

Next, the city will strive to develop itself into a national demonstration city for environmental conservation, according to local authorities.
