A meeting on improving public security throughout Zhejiang province was recently held in Hangzhou. Zhoushan, along with Jiaxing and Lishui, received an award for its strong public security record over the past 15 years. This is the province's highest public security honor.

The city has been focusing on improving public security since 2004 and is working to build itself into one of the nation's safest cities.

Zhoushan ranked first in the province in public satisfaction toward urban safety last year, with a 98.88 percent satisfaction rate. The numbers of criminal cases, trespassing cases and thefts decreased 7 percent, 12.3 percent, and 21.9 percent year on year, respectively.

In addition, the number of work-related accidents dropped 22.6 percent last year, with the death toll from such accidents down 24.1 percent. The number of fires dropped 20 percent and traffic casualties were down 18.28 percent.
