Bao Feiyue, a skilled chef and 38-year-old native of Zhoushan, was recently awarded the membership medal and certificate of the Académie Culinaire de France (literally meaning the Culinary Academy of France) by Fabrice Prochasson, the president of the academy in Paris.

The academy was established by Joseph Favre, a famous chef, in 1883, and is currently the oldest catering and pastry academy in the world.

Applicants to the academy must have worked as a chef in France for over nine years before being considered for membership, according to local authorities.

The academy now has 1400 members from all over the world, most of whom work as chefs at Michelin restaurants. Bao is the first Chinese member of the academy.

Bao was born in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, East China’s Zhejiang province in 1982. He started to learn how to cook at Dinghai Vocational School in 1998 and went to Paris for further education after graduation.
