A blood donation meeting was held at the municipal blood center in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province on Jan 12 to announce official data on last year's blood donations.

In 2019, the blood center received a total of 14,164 donors, up 4.8 percent year-on-year, who donated 20,512 units of blood (200ml per unit), a year-on-year increase of 6.82 percent.

This is the first time that the annual blood donation in the city has exceeded 20,000 units, and 100 percent of the blood for clinical use came from donations in 2019, said Yu Qiyue, director of the center.

There are currently 21 hospitals in the city providing blood-supply services, according to Yu.

In order to ensure the safety of the donated blood, the municipal blood center bought several different types of equipment last year, including automatic blood separation devices and intelligent portable blood tanks.
