Zhoushan to spend over $26m in worker training subsidies

The city of Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province recently implemented a new incentive policy to encourage local workers to attend training sessions.

According to the policy, the city will provide a total of 180 million yuan ($26.4 million) in subsidies for those who participate in the training sessions.

Local workers can receive up to 3,800 yuan in training subsidies depending on the types of their jobs and the level of their professional titles.

The policy is expected to help more than 100,000 workers receive training by the end of 2021, said an official at the Zhoushan municipal bureau of human resources and social security.

"The aim of the policy is to cultivate skilled workers that meet the needs of the city's economic and social development," said Dai Guohong, an official in charge of skill training at the bureau. "The city has given training subsidies to workers in the past as well, but far less than the amount provided currently."

In recent years, the city has been working to cultivate more skilled workers and has implemented a number of relevant incentive policies.

In 2019, a total of 33,200 people were employed in the urban areas of the city, a year-on-year increase of 96.45 percent, while the registered unemployment rate in urban areas was only 1.76 percent, 0.71 percentage points less than 2018.
