Dinghai builds bridge in memory of deceased volunteer

Updated : 2020-01-03 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The foundation of A'po Bridge in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province was recently completed.

A'po (literally meaning "the granny") Bridge was named after the "bridge washing granny" Yin Guilan, a local volunteer who passed away on Dec 4, 2019 at the age of 94.

Yin, known for her kindness and generosity, earned the nickname because she devoted more than 10 years of her life to washing dirty bridges in Zhoushan.

She was first interviewed and called the "bridge washing granny" by journalists at the Zhoushan Evening News while washing Jishi Bridge, which was muddy and plastered with advertising papers, in 2003.

Many locals were moved by Yin's selfless actions and called for the construction of a bridge to cherish memory of the respectable granny.

The bridge's name was approved by the Dinghai district government in late December 2019 after locals submitted their ideas online.

Zheng Yanyun, director of the district's department of geographic names, said that A'po Bridge is the first structure to be built in memory of and named after an ordinary citizen.

According to local authorities, the district's government will invite notable cultural figures to write inscriptions on the bridge to pay tribute to Yin's efforts and carry forward her volunteer spirit.
