Journalists at Zhoushan Network Media Co visited a home-based care service center for the elderly in Xiazhi town, Putuo district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province on Dec 13.

The center, which cost 900,000 yuan ($128,650) to build and covers an area of 1,300 square meters, consists of a number of different areas.

The two-floor center, which can accommodate up to 150 people, is equipped with a stairway chair lift for the convenience of the elderly.

The first floor consists of a dining hall, while the second floor has a reading room, a workshop, a laundry room, and several recreation and medical rooms.

"The stairway chair lift is nice. All we have to do is sit down and fasten the seat belt, and then it takes us to the second floor. The food provided in the dining hall is delicious," said Zhou Ruchun, an 83-year-old local resident in the town and regular customer at the center.

To date, the city has constructed a total of 13 home-based care service centers for elderly residents, among which six are in Dinghai district, two in Daishan county, three in Shengsi county and two in Putuo district, said an official at the Zhoushan municipal bureau of civil affairs.

The centers, which are operated by service companies under the supervision of the local governments, can provide a variety of services, including short-term nursing, catering, medical services, and more.
