Zhoushan improves education for students on small islands

Updated : 2019-12-16 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Journalists in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province recently inspected several schools on Liuheng Island in Putuo district, including Shuangyugang Kindergarten and Taimen Middle School.

Zhoushan is a prefecture-level archipelagic city consisting of 1,390 islands, a number of which are small and lacking in adequate educational resources.

At the beginning of this year, the Zhoushan municipal government began implementing a three-year plan to improve education for students living on such islands.

Educational facilities in these schools are currently on par with those in urban areas.

"The facilities in our school were upgraded as part of the three-year plan," said a high-ranking employee at a school on Liuheng Island.

Over 100 prominent urban school teachers were sent to island schools this year in order to provide a better education to students residing on the islands.

According to this year's provincial survey on satisfaction toward education, the satisfaction rates in Daishan and Shengsi, two island-based counties in Zhoushan, have increased by 10.4 and 8.5 percent respectively.

Local authorities said that the Zhoushan municipal government plans to hire qualified retired teachers at high salaries and send them to teach students on the islands.
