Putuo district in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province was recently designated as a national demonstration district for ecological civilization construction by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China.

Experts said that it is the highest honor to won this title in the fields of ecological civilization construction and environment protection.

Zhoushan is a provincial leader in the construction of ecological civilization, with a full half of its districts having been designated as demonstration districts.

In recent years, the district has been implementing a variety of green development strategies. A work committee was established under the guidance of the district government and Party committee to promote the construction of ecological civilization in the district.

In the first 10 months of this year, the district enjoyed excellent air quality on 95.7 percent of days, up 0.8 percentage points year-on-year.

Since 2016, the district has canceled nearly 30 projects worth over 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) that do not meet environmental protection standards.

To date, the district has built three provincial demonstration towns for rural renovation, seven provincial featured villages and over 6,800 beautiful yards.

It has also built an online platform for farmland environment monitoring, promoted 30 key water management projects, and added 120 soil monitoring points.

The district has also strengthened education in ecological civilization, with three provincial ecological civilization education bases.
