The 1st Zhoushan International Orienteering Competition was held on Nov 23 in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province.

Over 300 contestants from 11 countries and regions, including Russia, Tanzania and Burma, participated in the competition.

The contestants were divided into three groups – a group for families, a group for college students, and a group for everyone else.

Orienteering, a unique type of sport, requires participants to use a map and a compass to navigate from point to point. Whoever finishes quickest is declared the winner.

Yu Yuehui, director of the Zhoushan municipal sports center, said that the competition focused on the integration of sports, history, culture, and tourism, among other elements.

The route of the competition, 6,000 meters in length, included seven check points, all of which were major tourist sites in the district, including a hall of fame, two museums, two famous streets, and a park themed around the First Opium War.

Each contestant was required to navigate to every check point marked on the map, complete a task, and then move on to the next point until they arrive at the finish line.
