Sun Binyong, a mathematician and native of Zhoushan, was selected to become an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, according to a document released by the academy on Nov 22.

Sun, 42 years old, is currently a research professor for the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science. He is the youngest among this year's newly selected academicians at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to official data, the average age of these academicians is 55.7 years old, with the maximum age being 67 and the minimum age being 42.

Sun was born in Liuheng town, Putuo district in 1976. He won the top prize in a provincial mathematical olympiad in high school and was recommended to Zhejiang University.

He received his doctorate from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2004 and then started working at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science in 2005.

The academy gave him accelerated promotion to research professor in 2011 for his achievements in the research of infinite-dimensional representations of typical groups.

Sun has won several national scientific awards, including second place at the State Science and Technology Prizes – the highest honor in science and technology in China.

Sun said that although he has studied and worked outside of Zhoushan for many years, his hometown has never been far from his mind. He has loved following the city's development over the years.
