A Yue opera troupe from Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province recently arrived in Esplanade, a famous seaside performance center in Singapore.
The troupe came here to perform the large-scale Yue opera Guanshiyin, an original work created by Zhoushan scriptwriters.
The opera ran for several consecutive days in the 2000-seat performance center. Tickets sold out quickly.
"The actors did a great job and the performance was both touching and impressive in scale. I really loved the stories about the goddess Guanshiyin," said a female audience member in Singapore.
Guanshiyin, also known as the bodhisattva Guanyin, is the goddess of mercy in Chinese Buddhism.
The name, which can be literally translated as "the one who perceives the world", is associated with compassion and mercy in the Chinese language.
Hu Zhigang, head of the troupe, said that the troupe came to share Zhoushan's unique Yue opera and Guanyin culture with audiences in Singapore.
Singapore is home to many ethnically Chinese people who have the same Chinese culture as natives in China, Hu added.
According to Hu, the troupe consists of over 70 staff members, including performers, support crew and publicists.
