Zhoushan's air quality composite index remained at first place in Zhejiang and fourth place in China, according to local authorities on Aug 14.

In the first half of 2019, the daily average concentration of PM2.5 in the downtown area was 24 micrograms per cubic meter, down 7.7 percent year-on-year. The high quality rate of the urban air reached 96.7 percent, 2.8 percentage points higher than the same period last year.

Zhoushan has been dedicated to driving the high-quality development of the local economy, while maintaining the high quality of the local environment. The city has won a provincial honor in recognition of its clean environment, for the 10th consecutive year.

Since the beginning of this year, the city's municipal government has issued a series of plans on environment remediation, especially on the management of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. To date, six VOC management projects have been completed.
