A forum on digitalization was recently held in Daishan county, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, gathering more than 120 government and business representatives to discuss how to promote digital construction in the county.

The county is now working on integrating its real economy with internet, big data and artificial intelligence.

It aims to build four smart manufacturing bases for environmentally friendly petrochemicals, new materials, ships and ship accessories, four smart service platforms for digital trade, port-centered logistics, ocean tourism and new business types, as well as four smart parks for small and micro sized digital enterprises, agricultural tourism, ocean farming and island communities.

"Promoting digitalization is very important for island areas, as it helps solve many problems caused by an inconvenient traffic system," said Kang Zhuan, deputy director of Zhoushan's department of economy and information application.

"With 4G and 5G communication networks that ensure information interconnectivity, most business can now be done over the internet, which facilitates the exploitation of marine resources and helps to develop an open and intelligent economy," added Kang.

Kang also suggested that Daishan develop a digital economy with distinctive local characteristics by combining the economy with fisheries, port industry, tourism, petrochemical engineering, and ship building.

Four projects involving 5G, internet of things, big data and cloud computing were signed between government and local companies in Daishan.

Daishan has made progress in promoting the application of 5G. China Mobile Daishan launched two 5G base stations in Yushan Island in April, which are currently undergoing trials. In addition, China Mobile Zhoushan plans to launch more than 10 5G base stations in the county this year which will be put into commercial operation by 2020.
