Pu Yu Gang Huan 1, an ocean trash collecting ship, proved to be of great help for ocean cleanup since it was launched in Putuo district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on Jan 28.

"The ship can quickly collect the trash and oil dirt floating on the ocean, which is much more efficient than manual collection," said Lu Qike, chief engineer of the ship.

The ship, 25.81 meters long, 7.57 meters wide and 9.93 meters tall, can not only collect trash, but is also equipped with a water cannon for putting out ship fires.

Lu said that the trash, including plastic foam, plastic bottles, tree branches and wood boards, are drifted in with the tide, discarded by companies along the shore or abandoned by local residents and tourists.

The trash collected by the ship will be sent to the local sanitation companies for disposal.
