A delegation of experts, law enforcement officials and media workers investigated the Wuzhishan Islands, dubbed "paradise of seabirds", in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity, to carry out activities for biodiversity protection of the islands.

The delegation was organized by local authorities in charge of biological environment and natural resources. They were impressed by flocks of birds flying on the islands, as May is the month when seabirds start to set up their homes on an island.

"Protection at this time is very important. We need to keep a close watch on the eco-environment change on the island and see if there's anyone attempting to damage the environment," said an expert.

Wuzhishan Islands, located seven kilometers northwest of the Zhoushan Island, are composed of seven islands, with a coastline of 5.4 kilometers and attracting tens of thousands of seabirds to settle and multiply.

Thanks to several years of careful protection, the number of seabirds settling on the islands increased from several hundred in 1986 to more than 10,000 now.

Experts recorded a total of 48 kinds of seabirds on the islands in 2017, some of which are endangered species.

Wuzhishan Islands are now one of the top three bird reserves in China.
