"I have been donating blood since 1998, until last year when I turned 60, and I would keep this routine if it wasn't required by law that only those aged 60 or below can donate blood. I had donated a total of 12,200cc blood," said Gong Xiaoyin, a local resident in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province.

Gong has donated blood 37 times over the past two decades. She was honored as a moral model of the city and received a national gold award for unpaid blood donation.

Encouraged by her, Gong's husband and son also joined in the blood donation, and they each have donated more than 4,000cc blood to date.

Though not able to donate blood now, Gong regularly provides volunteer services for the city's blood donation organization, such as measuring blood pressure for and offering sugar water to donors. She also encouraged others to join the blood donation by publically sharing her experiences.

In addition, Gong has been doing other things to help people, such as settling the disputes between husband and wife, and donating money and clothes to students in poor areas or people in disaster-stricken areas.
