The islands city of Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province witnessed a tourism boom during the May Day holiday, from May 1 to 4, local media reported on May 5.
The city received more than 1.08 million tourists in the period, up 22 percent year on year, generating tourist revenue of around 1.32 billion yuan ($195.6 million), up 15.3 percent from a year earlier.
As usual, most of the tourists drove to Zhoushan, mainly from Zhejiang province and surrounding areas such as Shanghai and Jiangsu, Fujian, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces. The number of cars entering and exiting the city totaled 74,762 on May 1, a new record in the city's daily traffic flow.
Mount Putuo remained the top destination, with 400,000 tourists entering and exiting the scenic area during May 1 and 3.
Other hot destinations included Gouqi Island, Huaniao Island, Baisha Island, Putuo Rural Complex, Guanyinshan Scenic Area, Lulanqingsha Scenic Area and Nandongyigu Scenic Area.
Despite the busy traffic, no major tourist complaints or accidents occurred during the holiday, thanks to the local police's efficient emergency response and vigorous efforts to maintain traffic order.
