Guo Lingdi, a retired teacher from Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province was recently honored as one of the "Most Beautiful Volunteers" in China, local media reported.

Aged 79, Guo was called "Loving Granny" by local residents for her two decades of unremitting effort in volunteer work.

Guo started the work when she retired from school, and became a professional volunteer by joining the local volunteers association in 2002.

She has been devoted to the education of deaf-mute children and children of migrant workers over these years, and cared about their life by raising clothes for those in financial difficulty.

"I feel a sense of accomplishment from doing what I can for society and seeing the big smiles on the children's faces," said Guo.

Realizing the limit of an individual's strength, Guo started to encourage more people to join her, including her friends, relatives and students, as well as people from surrounding schools and companies.

She established the "Loving Granny" workshop in 2016, working with six teams of more than 100 volunteers for the elderly and children of migrant workers.

Guo said that she has lately been thinking about establishing an association of voluntary work, and is in negotiation with local authorities and volunteer groups for that purpose.

"I hope that such a platform will be made a reality through the joint efforts of the government, schools, companies and volunteers to help children realize their dreams," said Guo.
