Ten villages in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province were recently selected as the city's most beautiful villages, as announced by local authorities on Jan 18. 

The villages have been selected to serve as a model for other villages to improve themselves and thus enhance the overall rural construction of the city.

The 10 villages include the Xinjian village and Ma'ao village in Dinghai district, Shajing village, Baishagang village and Dongxiao village in Putuo district, Tukou village and Xiubei village in Daishan county, and Zhi'ao village, Huangsha village and Huaniao village in Shengsi county. 

They not only boast beautiful scenery, but also have sound mechanisms for environment protection, and are well-developed in the tourism, e-commerce and cultural industries.

Ma'ao village, for example, takes advantage of its traditional farming culture and modern agriculture, and pursues the integrated development of agriculture, culture and tourism.

Dongxiao village, once a famous fishing village, taps into its fishing culture and has developed unique homestays.

The selection process lasted from Nov 5, 2018 to Jan 14, with 296 villages taking part in it.
