Wu Xudong, a surgeon from Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, recently went viral on the internet for kindly making dinner for a foreign patient.
"They treat me just like a friend," said the patient thankfully, whose knee was operated on by Doctor Wu at the Zhoushan City Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine earlier this month.
The patient was melancholy after the operation and refused to eat due to pain and homesickness, according to a nurse at the hospital.
Upon hearing the message, Wu had been trying to take time from his busy schedule to cook a dinner for the patient, and finally made it on Dec 20 when he got off work early.
Wu rushed home and prepared the dinner within less an hour, and stayed with the patient for a while before heading for another surgery. The patient finished all the food that Wu prepared, according to the nursing workers.
This is not the first time that Wu has made dinner for foreign patients, said a former head nurse at the arthropathy department that Wu leads, citing a Ukrainian patient that had thanked Wu for his dinner before.
Wu said that he often received foreign patients as Zhoushan was a port city, and they would often feel depressed due to illness and language problems, so he wanted to cheer them up by making dinner for them.
Not only foreign patients, but any patient in Wu's department that faced difficulties can receive such special help from Wu and his colleagues. The medical team at Wu's department has been honored as one of the province's civilized youth working teams for three consecutive years.
