An ore carrier with the capacity of 400,000 metric tons was unveiled at the Zhejiang Eastern Shipyard Co in Daishan county, Zhoushan city, Zhejiang province on Sept 3.

The carrier, built by the China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co, is 362 meters long, 65 meters wide and 30 meters deep, and is the largest ever ore carrier made in China in terms of capacity.

She was named Pacific Prosperity at the delivery ceremony and was given over to the China Merchants Energy Shipping Co.

As an upgraded version of previous carriers of a similar nature, Pacific Prosperity features an energy saving system that enhances the utilization efficiency of fuel oils.

The vessel is also equipped with four large ballast pumps, and boasts a loading speed of 24,000 tons per hour.

She will sail for Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, a Brazil iron ore producer and exporter, to import ore materials to China, according to Zhu Guiming, vice general manager of the China Merchants Industry Holdings Co, parent company of the China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co.

"We chose to build the vessel in Zhoushan because of its advantageous natural conditions, and we will continue to build large maritime vessels and luxury cruises here," said Zhu.
